From petition to parliament: Paris's Law campaign

Over 100,000 people have now signed the Paris’s Law petition, marking a major milestone in the campaign to reform sentencing for coercive control and domestic abuse cases in the UK.

Paris’s Law was founded by Paris Shears following her personal experience of the criminal justice system. After waiting over 530 days for her case to go to trial, her former partner changed his plea on the day, resulting in a reduced sentence and the charge of controlling and coercive behaviour not being pursued. 

This outcome highlighted a significant gap in how coercive control is recognised within sentencing.

Paris’s Law is calling for urgent legal reform to ensure coercive control is properly considered, victims are better protected, and sentencing reflects the full impact of abuse.

The petition has now reached Parliament for consideration.

While we await confirmation on whether it will be debated, the campaign continues to build momentum, raising awareness, amplifying survivor voices, and pushing for meaningful legislative change.
